Agitating doctors in West Bengal to meet CM Mamata Banerjee to end week-long standoff

In West Bengal, the striking junior doctors of NRS and other state run Medical Colleges & Hospitals are likely to attend the meeting with the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today.

The meeting is convened to settle the crisis pegged in the health service sectors in the state for the last six days. The meeting is scheduled to take place at the state administrative headquarters, Nabanna, at 3 pm today.

Two student representatives of the fourteen state run medical colleges will be present in the meeting. The written invitation for the meeting as asked by the striking doctors, has also been received by them. Doctors had demanded that meeting take place before the media but it is learnt that the government has assured that the proceedings of the meeting will be recorded.

The meeting is expected to find out a solution of the prevailing partial stalemate at the state run medical colleges due to strike of the junior doctors.

The junior doctors of the NRS Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata started agitation after two of their colleagues were beaten up as a consequence of the death of an aged patient.

Five people were arrested in connection with beating up the doctors and they were denied bail in the court. The state govt has, meanwhile, beefed up the security in all the govt hospitals in the state as per the main demand of the striking doctors. The centre has also asked for reports from the state government regarding the prevailing situation.
